McNeal is a one-act stage play written by Ayad Akhtar, directed by Bartlett Sherr, starring Robert Downey Jr and Melora Hardin. The play deals with topics such as artificial intelligence, artistic integrity, plagiarism, and copyright infringement. Previews of the play began on Broadway on September 5, 2024, at the Vivian Beaumont Theater at Lincoln Center. The show officially opened on September 30. RDJ plays Jacob McNeal, an acclaimed literary novelist who is poised to win the Pulitzer at the play’s outset. Jake Barton, who leads the team at Local Project, brought me on board to attempt to give McNeal’s novel backlist the feel of a literary giant.
